Sudbury YMCA Honours Local Peacemakers

Peace Week 2014

Sudbury YMCA Honours Local Peacemakers

(Sudbury, ON) – From November 18-25, YMCA Peace Week invites people of all ages to reflect on peace, to talk, and to take action, individually and with others. A special highlight of this week is the presentation of the YMCA Peace Medal to individuals who, without any special resources, have demonstrated a commitment to the values of peace through contributions made within their local, national or global community.

This year’s ceremony will be held on Thursday, November 23rd and will honour 2 recipients who have made significant contributions towards peace-building. The 2017 YMCA Peace Medal will be presented to:

• Cristina Scarpellini – Christina has inspired others for her work providing victims of human trafficking, addictions and mental health with round-the-clock support, compassion and providing them with an opportunity for recovery. Christina and her team, the Angels of Hope, is a group of dedicated volunteers who have been giving members of our community support and compassion since 2015.

• St. Charles College Food Drive – Being recognized for coordinating a generous donation of two school buses filled with food for the Sudbury Food Bank. Their generosity has inspired local action across Sudbury to support those who do not have access to food. This group has demonstrated selfless acts of kindness to help feed our community, give back, encourage and empower our youth to make a difference in the world.

“The recipients of the YMCA Peace Medal are a tremendous inspiration and they demonstrate how we can improve the quality of life in our local, national or global community. They exemplify the values of YMCA Peace Week and the positive impact any one of us can make,” says Jacqueline Grube, Vice President of Children’s Services at the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario.

Peace Week 2014

Join-Us

The Sudbury YMCA invites you to join us for YMCA Peace Week from November 18-25, a time when we celebrate the presence of peace in our communities, and reflect on the peace-building work that happens all year both inside and outside the YMCA.

Get-Involved

When people are included in their communities and have opportunities to be heard, contribute, and shape the way things work, they tend to relate peacefully to others. Acts for peace tend to grow outward, creating ripples through the whole community. An act for peace may affect only one person directly - but it may show many more people what's possible. Peacemakers challenge and inspire others to pursue acts for peace. How can you “act for peace”? Join us for YMCA Peace Week!

2016-17 Annual Report to the Community

2017-agm-invite-web

The Sudbury YMCA Annual Report to the Community was held Monday, October 16th at the YMCA.

The past year was one of milestones, change, growth and success as the YMCAs in North Bay and Sudbury moved from an Alliance Agreement to officially joining together as the amalgamated YMCA of Northeastern Ontario. While each YMCA will remain unique, acting as one means more for everyone. More choice, more partnerships, more connections, more shared resources, and more efficiencies for a stronger organization that will strive to achieve positive impact throughout the communities we serve.

On behalf of the YMCA Board of Directors, we are pleased to share our 2016-17 Annual Report with you. Please click the file below to download.

YMCA Membership Fee Update

This Fall, the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario, along with YMCAs across Canada, will be implementing a new membership software system. This new software will offer enhanced customer service including, for the first time, the ability for members and participants to register for YMCA memberships, programs and services online. Staff are currently working hard to ensure a smooth transition.

At the same time, our YMCAs have also been reviewing our current membership categories to determine where changes could be made to better serve our members and our community. Our research has shown an opportunity for updates that would benefit individuals and families while allowing us to continue to deliver the highest quality programs and services possible.

As a result of these findings, and in coordination with the launch of our new software system, the Board of Directors of the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario wishes to announce the YMCA will be introducing a single-price YMCA Family Membership which will replace our current tiered-price family membership. We will also be offering a more inclusive Young Adult Membership (for everyone ages 18-29 years) which will replace our current Student Membership (for students ages 18-24 years). Finally, the YMCA is updating our memberships to include a new and convenient bi-weekly payment option. Our new membership fees beginning September 15, 2017 will be:
