About the YMCA

A lot has changed since the first Canadian YMCA opened its doors in 1851, yet one thing remains the same: our passion to improve lives and communities. At the YMCA, our values and purpose drive everything that we do. As a charity, we've championed values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

The YMCA is a charity by definition and through its activities. All policies are determined by a volunteer board of directors which responds to local needs in local ways. We care about our community and the physical, mental, social, spiritual, occupational, and emotional health of all people.

Volunteerism and Philanthropy

The YMCA's long and successful track record would never have been possible, were it not for its thousands of volunteers and their profound spirit and generosity. Since the earliest of days, the YMCA has been a partnership between committed volunteers (like its founders), dedicated staff and our community. This partnership is rooted in the YMCA's unwavering belief in ordinary people working together to achieve shared goals for themselves, their community and the world.

As a charity, the YMCA continues to rely on our community for support. Fund raising as it is known today, has been attributed to YMCA campaigns in Sudbury dating back to 1937. Fund raising efforts have always helped to provide more needed services to more people, greater accessibility, better programs and facilities and financial assistance to those otherwise unable to benefit.

Programs and Services

YMCA Sudbury offers a diverse range of programs and services to meet the needs of our community. We have a 70,000 square foot fitness and recreation centre in downtown Sudbury in the Centre for Life, we operate two residential summer camps and outdoor education centres, we offer extensive employment programs through the YMCA Employment and Career Services, we offer Licensed School Aged Child Care, and international partnerships to provide services in developing countries.
